Questions You Should Ask an Arborist
If you are thinking of hiring a tree surgeon or an arborist to carry out tree care services, there are various questions you should ask before you commit to hiring their services.
First of all, ensure they are fully-insured, certified, and equipped with suitable equipment when carrying out any tree surgery work. Failure to have these could put your property or trees in danger.
Step 1: Ask for a Quote
Tree surgeries which use chainsaws and any other arboricultural equipment can be a dangerous exercise. It is, therefore, important for you to ensure that the tree surgeon you’ve given the job has suitable liability insurance in case of property damage and injury.
If the arborist fails to provide a written quotation, you may want to reject the job. Although being a member of a professional organisation doesn’t guarantee work standards, it shows the level of commitment. Ask for a phone number reference who can demonstrate the standard of their previous works. If possible, always obtain multiple quotes to choose from.
Step 2: Are they Qualified?
Most people do not understand that there are legal qualifications are not a must have to start a professional tree care business. The industry of Arboriculture is surprisingly largely unregulated. There are of course certified Arboriculture training, but starting a tree care business doesn’t require any special licenses or training. The International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) is a non-governmental, non-profit professional body which is dedicated to improving the standard and service and training in the industry. They require current members to undergo ongoing training to update their professional knowledge. There are also other training and professional schemes available; be sure to ask your arborist about their qualifications before hiring their services.
Step 3: Choosing the Quote That Suits You Best
After receiving the quotations, check if they have the following before accepting:
- Clear, full details of the work that needs to be performed
- How will the timber be handled?
- What will happen to the tree stumps?
- Is VAT included?
- Who will obtain permission if in case the trees happen to be protected?
- How will you be protected together with your property?
Also, please note that there could be limited validity period quotes.
